Chapter 9

The Centrality of Death in Israel

Shimon Koren was born in 1947 in the Wasserburg transit camp in Germany, the only son of Adolph and Rosa and the nephew of Henek Koren. (As mentioned earlier, Father was Henek’s counselor in the Gordonia youth movement.) Like his older brother Henek, Adolph was rescued from the horrors of the Holocaust.

On a Sunday afternoon, March 31, 2002, during the Passover holiday, Shimon and his two children were sitting at the Matza restaurant in the Neveh Sha’anan neighborhood in Haifa. It was a favorite restaurant of the family and they ate there often. Rachel, the mother, was supposed to join them, but changed her mind at the last moment. At 2:40 p.m., Shimon and Rachel spoke on the phone. Shimon asked his wife if she wanted them to bring her something from the restaurant. She said it wasn’t necessary. Moments after their conversation, a Palestinian terrorist burst into the restaurant and blew himself up. The bomb gutted the restaurant and set it ablaze, collapsing the roof on the diners. Dozens of people in the restaurant were injured in the attack and fifteen were killed, including Shimon and his two children, Ran and Gal. The look on Henek’s face when he came to my parents’ home to tell them the horrible story is impossible to forget.
